18 - Ann's Story of Post Natal Depression and how she survived both that and D-MER

31/5/2018

Like so many other women Ann was hit with post natal depression after giving birth to her first child.

She went from being a bubbly person to seriously wanting to end her own life.
Anti depressants helped her through this however after the birth of her second child things got worse.

Ann suffered with D-MER and the post natal depression hit her so badly after the birth of her second son that she recognised she could not even be left alone with her children.

Hear Ann's story about her black dog of depression, the emotional turmoil she suffered, crying all the time and an obsession with routine that suffocated any family spontaneity. Hear why, that in some instances, breast is not always best, especially when you have D-MER, a condition which floods you with a tsunami of despair when your milk lets down, hardly the joyful bonding experience which most women get to enjoy. Listen all the way to the end to find out how Ann discovered a route to recovery and managed to find herself again, her thoughts on reaching out for help and why she values this experience now.

17 - How James turned his life around after almost losing it to alcaholism

Years of alcoholism had left me broken, so much so I ended up in hospital after vomiting blood. I was around 120 kg, which was slim by comparison to the 130 kg I had been previously. My resting heart rate was rarely below 100 and my cholesterol was 21!

In fear of death I decided to stop drinking forever and at the same time I decided to start a fitness regime. Whilst still in hospital
I began entering my meals into a fitness app and it all went from there.
Those early days I had doctors orders to only walk but soon I was in the gym at Anytime Fitness and making strides. I'd always been fat so the day I first saw my abs was one of the most surreal days of my life and it filled me with pride.

I've gone from 130 kg at my heaviest to 79.8 kg at my lightest. I've not drunk a drop of alcohol in 2 years, 10 months and I've not exactly had a free ride since I got sober.

I lost both parents last year. My father to the same addiction I overcame and my mother to Cancer. I cared for my mother the last months of her life and that remains the greatest honor of mine.

I now work in addiction helping others overcome the problems I once faced and that fills me with an enormous sense of pride. I've done various things for charity, walked 21 miles for Meningitis, skydived for an addiction charity.

My life is an achievement, the very fact I have one!

Here is a note that James's sister wanted to add to this story.

What I would like to add, is that he did all this and managed to show our mum his story on Wednesday 3rd of February 2016, our mum died 2 days later and whilst dealing with the trauma of that he stayed strong. Unfortunately only 9 months after that our dad also died (mum was just 59, dad was 64, so neither deaths were expected). He has gone from strength to strength, not only did his physical self change but also his mental health as even though he has an addictive personality, when faced with the awful reality of losing your mum and shortly after your dad, most would slip back into old ways. He didn’t and now he looks even better than in this photo. He has the most amazing and beautiful girlfriend and spends his days helping others. An all round good soul, I wouldn’t have said that a few years ago. its been a terrible few years for our family but I genuinely couldn’t be prouder of the man my brother has become throughout it all. He is now my closest friend and confident and has been there for me and my children too. x

16 - Sian Woodland life after the loss of her fiance Paul and how she now keeps Pauls memory alive by helping others.

So I won't get any awards for my film making and editing skills on this video, watch for the bloopers. Sian and I met up for a dog walk (you will see the dogs!) and for Sian to tell her story. Somehow while playing with my fancy new camera I deleted half of it... but never mind as we managed to catch up again via Zoom more recently to capture the end of the story again.
Excuse the dog panting and playing in the background at the start and my lack of skills. This is an important story.

Sian Woodland was tragically bereaved when her fiancé was caught underneath a boat and drowned during a training exercise with SF. At the time of posting it has been almost six years since Pauls untimely death. Along with the help of friends and family Sian has campaigned tirelessly to raise money for various military charities, the jewel in the crown being Woody’s Lodge, a safe place for veterans to go and chill out, access various activities, guidance and support with form filling etc.

Watch the video now to hear Sians full story.

15 - Free Demolition

In early 2018 we bought a house down the road from where we were living. The house is in a village in the Peak District on a fairly steep road. The house is on the corner at the end of a terraced row.

Our new house had been empty for a little while and the outside needed some tidying up. We thought we might want to have a drive at the front because the existing surfacing was not great and rainwater kept depositing mud against the garden wall at the lower level. We made some sketches to show various contractors what we wanted, including demolition of the existing front garden wall, and asked for a couple of quotes.

We found the right contractor, price and the timescale for the work to be completed was agreed. They were supposed to finish before the end of February – just in time for us to move in. However, after a couple of weeks had passed nothing had even been started so I rang and rang but the contractor’s phone was silent. I tracked him down on Facebook only to find out that due to personal circumstances he could no longer do the work.

At this point it was late February, the winter hit the UK hard, especially the Peak District. So the plans for the driveway had to be put on hold for a while anyway but I contacted one of the other contractors to arrange for the work to be done by him instead.

On the first of March, just before moving in, we had a handyman painting and fixing bits and bobs in the house. I got a panicked phone call from the handyman saying that I needed to come quickly as there had been a terrible accident. Somebody had crashed their car into our new home! It sounded scary so I went straight there to investigate.

The driver was our neighbour’s girlfriend and thankfully she had not been hurt. She was driving down the hill in the snow, lost control and hit the front wall which was now partly demolished. Luckily no other cars or people were involved. The girl was very sorry and shocked. She kept apologising to me and said that her father was a gardener and would rebuild the wall to make good the damage. It was great to be able to reassure her that it wouldn’t be necessary and that we wanted the wall removed anyway. Her father came and removed the rest of the wall so we were able to then cut a little cost off the price we had been expecting to pay for the new driveway.

That seemed to work well for everyone.
