49 - Allan Kleynhans - a transformational life

Allan grew up in South Africa. He lived right next door to a prison and saw things that no child should witness.

At the time national service was enforced in South Africa and upon leaving education Allan was sent into the army. Having completed his basic training  he was sent to Angola on a covert operation.
The atrocities that he saw during that conflict left Allan with terrible emotional scars which would stay with him for life. At the peak of the pain when Allan first returned home he struggled to sleep and turned to drinking heavily.

The drinking continued for about 6 months until a friend of his lent him a copy of Napoleon Hills 'Think and Grow Rich.' and so began Allans journey into self development.

Allan is now a coach and speaks on stages all around the world. He is one of Anthony Robbins top approved coaches.

In 2008, life was good.  At thirty four years old, I had recently bought a house with my boyfriend and enjoyed my job as a Lettings Manager in a local firm.

Then one night, after a phone call from my sister, everything changed.  Mum had been admitted into hospital with a ruptured gallbladder, and after a long and complicated surgery the doctors had found cancer cells.  Mum's battle with cancer had begun, but it was never a fair fight.
At that point we didn't know she was terminally ill and for that I am grateful, as despite the cancer returning twice in the next five years (resulting in grueling chemo treatments) there were good times:  planning my wedding day together, the arrival of my little girl and a memorable weekend visiting the beautiful city of Bath which had been my childhood home.

In late 2012 the cancer came back for a fourth time, but now it was clear things were very different.  A MacMillan nurse quickly became involved, and mum's hospital stays became longer and more frequent.

In March 2013 I quit my job to spend as much time with Mum as possible.  It turns out we didn't have long.  Towards the end I dreaded going to the hospital.  Every visit left me with another haunting memory that would stay with me forever.  When Mum finally slipped away I was relieved that she was finally at peace, but I also felt completely and utterly lost.  Mum had always been so entwined in my life and I didn't know if I could be happy again without her.

However there was one positive thing I did after leaving work earlier that year.  I had taken a part time class in creative writing at the local Adult Community College and loved it.

Once a week, for ten weeks, I went along and shut everything else out.  Now I started to wonder if I could find another writing class.  I began researching online and one day came across a degree in Professional & Creative Writing at a nearby university.  I hadn't gone to university before (the thought had always terrified me) but now I wasn't scared.  Instead, slightly numb from what life had thrown at me over the past few years I just felt curious.

My daughter was about to start school too, so suddenly it seemed like the right time to do something completely different.  A few days later I was driving along thinking about what to do next, when I pulled the car over.  I needed to call the university to see if I could speak to someone.  It felt like now or never.  I got lucky.  They put me through to a senior lecturer on the course and I immediately felt at ease.  He had a friendly American accent and after I explained a bit about myself he assured me I wasn't too old to be embarking on the course.  In fact, he said, creative writing was the perfect degree for a mature student.  After the call I felt sure this was the right decision and started the application process.  The university contacted me a few weeks later to say I had been accepted on the full time degree programme.  It meant six hours a week of lectures and seminars at the university and around thirty hours a week of study and writing outside class.  From that moment things moved quickly with paperwork, form signing, organising a loan - all leading to a start date that autumn.

Just over three months after losing mum I was sat in an impressive lecture theatre surrounded by other first year students.  Looking around the beautiful old building I knew this was exactly where I wanted to be.  Pen poised I waited for the lecture to start.

I graduated with first-class honours, and at my graduation I thought about Mum the whole day.  I had used some of my difficult experiences in my writing and happier times too, like my dissertation which was a series of 'Letters To My Mother' about growing up together in the seventies and eighties.  I love that she is firmly part of my journey.

These last few years I have learnt valuable lessons outside the classroom too.  When life knocks you down, it's okay to stay there for a while.  Take the time to think about you.  Think about what have you always wanted to do, where your passions lie.  At the end of the day, it's what has happened to you in the past that has made you the person you are now, so use it, grow stronger through it and, most of important of all, learn to accept it.  Then slowly pick yourself up and plan your next chapter.
