86 - Lauren Chiren - How going through the menopause affected my career but then enhanced it.

30/11/2018

Lauren was working in the international financial services sector working with teams around the world. She loved her job and the people she worked with.

However things started to go wrong. She wasn’t sleeping well so would turn up to work fatigued and struggle to remember what it was she was meant to be saying in meetings.

One day she was lucky that a colleague was there to catch her when she fainted. Her boss noticed that things were not quite as they should be and Lauren was able to work from home a little bit but she really did feel like she was losing the plot.

While on holiday with her son in Iceland Lauren slept well and had a lovely time, so much so that her son asked if they could come back when the snow had melted. The last night of their holiday Lauren found herself in floods of tears, she called the doctor.

Unbeknown to her Lauren had gone through the menopause.

As 50% of the population will experience the menopause at some time in their life Laurne decided that more awareness needed to be raised around the subject so that women could face this period of their life with dignity and not be penalised. Lauren now runs training workshops for men and women on what to expect. Lauren has even had men say to her after workshops ‘I think you just saved my marriage.’

85 - Roy Newport - PTSD left me frightened of going out in the daylight but now I walk dogs daily

30/11/2018

Around 15 years ago Roy decided to rejoin the army as a general service policeman. Part of his motivation was down to a friend committing suicide, Roy had a taxi business at the time, he was overweight and realised that there must be more to life than what he was currently experiencing.
When he rejoined at 34 he knew there was a very real chance he could go to go to Afghanistan, and that was what he wanted, to make himself proud and do his bit. Fighting for his place to get out to Afghanistan he was then embedded in with the Afghan National Police. There were some heavy losses. A legacy landmine injured Roy and took him away from the battlefield.

Roy got some physio for his injuries but then he was sent home which is where the demons started to set in. Unbeknown to him he started to display all the symptoms of PTSD, he was frightened to go out in the daylight and even went out in the dark with sunglasses on to try and hide his tears. Communicating with anyone would set him off. Of course this was hard to reconcile within himself due to his previous career as a military policeman. He sought help from his local GP but it took a long time for him to pluck up the courage to do so. Eventually he got the treatment he needed and got a lot better but this is an ongoing battle.

In a bid to get fit he decided to start walking a dog. Then he noticed that the dog was a great buffer between him and the rest of the world. Watch the interview to hear the full story.

83 - Jason Rawles - How money didn't buy me happiness but tapping into my true values did

29/11/2018

How could I not interview Jason Rawles, on the ‘About ’ page of Jasons website the very first line reads:-

‘The book of Jason is a story of personal accountability and extracting goodness from the bad.’

Everything the BeGlad Movement stands for.
This is a story of a man who had various struggles throughout his life but through grit and determination managed to make a success of himself in the IT sales world. He was a high flier, literally flying around the world and earning hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Unfortunately all this extra cash did not buy Jason happiness, something was not in alignment. He’d lost friends and wasn’t spending time with his family or having and adventures. He got so low he realised something had to give and it was time to take response-ability for his own happiness.

Watch the full interview to hear how Jason took himself off to ask himself some probing questions and take a good long look at what he had become and how that contrasted with who he really knew he wanted to be deep down.

Jason now leads guided hikes and expeditions as well as being a keynote speaker on the following topics

  • Personal accountability for success
  • Navigating leadership in business
  • What happens when your core values are conflicted
  • How adventure supports great leadership
  • Lessons learnt from life in leadership

81 -Jen Parker - rheumatoid arthritis dashed my dreams of being a police officer but didn't hold me back

28/11/2018

As a little girl Jen dreamed of becoming a police detective at the top of her game. She wanted it so badly she even had an imaginary friend who was in the force.

When Jen was growing up she suffered a lot of pain in her joints. This was written off as growing pains however the problem hit a peak when she was travelling with friends.

Excruciating pain in her fingers and thumb meant that when they arrived for two weeks in Australia they ended up staying for 8 months. Jen had to go straight to a doctor where she was told she had rheumatoid arthritis. Thankfully the correct treatment and medication was found do help Jen so she could continue her trip however on arriving home it soon became clear that her hopes for a career in the police force were over.

Thankfully Jen would go on to find a job in a small publishing office and was able to grow with them. She learnt all aspects of the publishing industry and was fortunate enough to have a very understanding boss who let her go freelance after having her baby. Jen now runs her own successful copy editing and design business from home. She is the editor of the super successful Mums on Fire book series and her own story will be featured in edition four which is due for release for pre order December 2018.

80 - Halima Nawaz - There is gladness in rejection.

TRUE STORY

On good coming out of bad...

Once upon a time I was 20 and I applied for a summer internship at KPMG. Abba (Urdu for father) had qualified with them many moons ago and I guess you could say I had designs on following in his footsteps.

I submitted my application and was invited to a phone interview. I passed that and then was invited for a final stage assessment day.
Here they would put a laptop with a fake inbox in front of all candidates and make us do an e-tray exercise in which I would entirely lose the plot.

A week later, I vividly remember sitting in the Edward Boyle Library when my phone buzzed from a private number. It was KPMG. “We’re sorry to inform you that at this stage you’ve been rejected from the process, we wish you the best of luck for the future.”

My first taste of rejection. Your heart sinks and with it any intellect you thought you possessed. You’re not good enough. That’s what rejection means, right? Wrong.

Of course at this stage I didn’t know that so I rang Abba crying to inform him of my rejection. He was in the car at the time with Imran Khan (yep the current PM of Pakistan), it was at the time when he was Chancellor of Bradford University and so he’d come to attend the degree giving ceremonies. So I blubber cried whilst Abba had me on speaker phone with IK in tow. Embarrassing. I didn’t know it at the time, though. I thought I’d just talked to Abba.

Cut to our kitchen and IKs departure later that day. And I recall these parting words from IK “beta, aapke Abba ne bataya ke apko KPGG ne reject kiya? Beta yaad rakho ke Allah ke har kaam mein behtri hoti hai, when one door closes, a better one will open in its place.” Translation: “kid(do), your dad told me that KPGG rejected you, but remember that in every work of God there is goodness...”

I didn’t have the heart to correct him on KPGG and I didn’t have life experience to understand what he’d meant. That was until of course, a couple of months later, the wisdom of his words manifested themselves for me; I got a job offer from PwC, the largest Professional Services firm in the world. I spent 8 years of my career with them and whilst it certainly wasn’t a merry-go-round (!) it was a life altering experience, one that introduced me to new parts of myself, life long friendships, financial independence and the prestige of PwC itself.

Who knows what would have happened at KPMG, who even cares anymore. I know now that how life unravelled for me was better than anything I was rejected from and I’ve truly come to find now through many more lived experiences, that rejection doesn’t mean you’re not good enough, it doesn’t mean you’re not worthy, it just means that particular thing or person isn’t right for you personally. Now I view rejection as the world (or rather God) removing from my path what isn’t good enough or right for me. It isn’t you that’s wrong; it’s them that’s wrong for you.

Rejection is painful. But if you keep focusing on that pain, you’ll miss seeing the doors and windows of better opportunities wide open for you. Rejection has always led to better alternatives in all my experiences since that one and boy can I tell you I’ve had my fair share more since then. Take the advice of the PM of Pakistan if you don’t believe me. The man spent 22 years of political struggle, 22 years of rejection before he was finally elected to lead the country to gladness.

There is gladness in rejection.

Best wishes,

Halima

79 - Vals husband died at sea leaving her with three young girls to raise, she says kindness is key

27/11/2018

Vals first husband, an ex navy officer, was working for the merchant navy when he sadly died at sea in Canada.

Val was working full time as a radiographer for the NHS when this happened. In those days they didn’t used to give much time off for compassionate leave.
Val went into auto pilot and got on with life for the sake of her three girls, trying to keep life going as best she could without any disruption to their routine. Rather than move back to Scotland which is where Val is originally from she stayed put in Southsea, sending the girls to school, continuing to work full time and renting out the spare rooms in her house to some Engineering students to help make ends meet.

The engineering students pretty much looked after themselves but they did help the girls with their maths homework. The house became a busy, chaotic but fun and happy house. The girls inherited some brothers to grow up with.

Val did eventually find a new husband to share life with and although the girls weren’t necessarily that receptive to begin with they now love him very much. Eventually Val gave up her job and the couple pursued their own adventures. Eventually Val decided to do a university degree and trained in world religions after discovering Unitarianism. She is now a Unitarian minister and conducts services that respect all religions. By their very nature a Unitarian is someone who respects all beliefs, they feel that religion and beliefs are personal and no one has the right to tell you what you should or shouldn’t believe. A lot of the funerals she conducts are humanist.

Vals overriding message from her life experiences is that the world would be a better place if we were all kinder. Kinder to ourselves through forgiveness and kinder to each other too. What have you done today to be kind to someone?

78 - Jane Sleight-Leach, how I now use my experiences of surviving an abusive relationship to help others

26/11/2018

Jane was born in the UK but moved to Australia where she got married and had two children. When Jane first moved she really felt like she was living the dream, having never really felt like the UK was the best place for her.
Life was good at first but eventually things took a turn for the worse and Jane became aware that she was now actually living in an abusive relationship.

As Jane was going through the hell of the breakup she was keenly aware that she felt there was a reason for all of this, that she needed to be diligent about collecting and retaining the information and resources that she was coming by as she went though her separation.

Because of her experiences Jane now works with women who have gone through the system, and come to a point where they essentially have been helped enough by the state and are left to fend by themselves. Jane helps these women by helping them to rediscover themselves. Jane says ‘I offer Retreats, Workshops, Groups and Personal Sessions focused on healing trauma, releasing embedded destructive beliefs and opening up intuition, emotional strength and guiding these women with their own vision of the future.’

Jane is an EFT and Matrix Re-imprinting Practitioner, a Certified Facilitator, Author, Speaker and Events Organizer & Coach.

77 - Fenella Hemus - how the death of my brothers & father taught me not to sweat the small stuff

26/11/2018

Fenella was always into physical activity and worked for ten years at an adventure playground. She found working with children and helping them discover themselves through play was very rewarding but wasn’t so keen on the stress that came with the staffing structure and her mostly absent boss.
Fenella had a particularly horrific period of time when she lost her two brothers and father in very close succession.  Her little brother died of bowel cancer, his diet and lifestyle contributing to this. A year later her other brother had a horrific motorbike accident.  Her father died three months later of lung cancer.

Managing to keep it together pretty well she had a moment of losing her temper with a young woman who was being abusive. Deciding that she didn’t like what had come out in that moment Fenella realised it was time for a change, life was for living and not for sweating the small stuff.  She went off on a series of adventures.

During this time and having always been interested in physical health Fenella firstly studied as a personal trainer, then as a nutritionist but she got frustrated with how her clients would sabotage their progress because of deeply held beliefs about who they were inside. Fenella went on to study NLP, Hypnosis and Time Line Therapy which finally brought the whole package together.
