My mum named me Pollyanna after the book and film Pollyanna in which the little girl plays the 'glad game.'

When I was growing up, if ever anything went wrong in my life my mum would say to me, 'Now come on Polly, play the glad game,' and
I would have to list off any positives I could see in that negative situation as well as all the things I was grateful for and lucky to have in my life. It's a strategy that has served me well over the years and I hope it will help you too.

I like to describe it as gratitude journaling in the moment, it would put a steady foundation back under my feet to stop me from falling into a world of despair. Our minds are tuned to look for negatives rather than positives, it's a survival technique from when we were primates, always on the look out for danger. I do think it is very important to allow yourself to feel disappointed, grief, anger, and to move through your emotions, pretending everything is fine is not healthy, listen to your emotions, they could be trying to tell you all is not well and you need to make some adjustments in your life.

This isn't about blind optimism and denial, it's about accepting bad things happen and looking for the positive way to move forward with your life. Our minds are so powerful and tend to attract more of what they are concentrating on. You need to exercise a positive mental mind set everyday just like you would go to the gym to get a healthy body, a healthy mindset is a great foundation to build from when crisis strikes.
